Regions of Portugal - Portalegre

Located to the North of the Alentejo, with the Spain to the East, Portalegre is a region offering much to the toursit and homebuyer alike. From the main city of Portalegre itself, within easy reach are the towns of Crato, Castelo de Vide, Marvão, and the region of Serra de São Mamede.

The mountain range known as the Serra de S. Mamede is made up of four peaks: Fria, Marvao, Castelo de Vide and Sao Mamede (the highest being 1025 metres). In addition to several examples of traditional architecture that can be found in the walled town of Marvao and in Castelo de Vide (where the largest Jewish community in Portugal lived), there are many other points of interest: the villages of Esperanca and Alegrete or the remains of the town of Amaia.

Portalegre

A town located close to the border of Spain that has strong religious background and this is evident by the number of churches and monasteries dating from the 13th Century. The ruined castle in the town is of medieval origin. The Cathedral dates from the 16th Century and has some additions from the 18th Century such as the Baroque façade. Adjacent to the cathedral is a small Municipal Museum that houses a very broad collection of items.The two chimneys that dominate the town acts as the guide to the a Museum related to the cork industry which has also played an important part in the economics of Portalegre.

Marvão

The small traditional houses of Marvão, a medieval town with walls dating from the thirteenth century, seem to squeeze the narrow little streets that wind between them.

Castelo de Vide

A most attractive, small Spa Town with lots of fascinating architectural character. Sitting on the northern edge of the Serra de São Mamede it is a popular place for passing tourists due to its natural welcoming charm and the claimed healing powers of its Spa waters. The old part of Castelo de Vide has lots of character with small typical houses of the region lining the steep very narrow cobbled streets.
